Friday 8th May / Freestyle presents
Russian born and London residing, DJ Vadim has built a reputation as one of the world’s top independent producers; travelling the globe, performing and collaborating with established and developing talents that cross continents, languages and cultures. Vadim has become well respected as an innovator in a number of areas during his career, “a veteran presence in the DJ community as well as one of the foremost producers in too many communities to count, Vadim is never running out of ideas” (URB Magazine).
Hard to put a peg on because he sticks to no rule-book, Vadim’s musical repertoire encompasses hip hop, trip hop, soul, funk, grime, reggae, dub and bass, and he has produced numerous solo and group albums across these genres (Ninja Tune, Jazzfudge, Wordsound, BBE) with seminal tracks such as The Terrorist, Black Is The Night and Bluebird. Throughout his career he has worked with a variety of musicians, singers and groups, including DJ Krush, Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Prince, Public Enemy, Dilated Peoples, Kraftwerk, Sly and The Family Stone, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Super Furry Animals, and Paul Weller.
Fingathing meanwhile, were formed in 1997 after DJ Peter Parker came 3rd in the DMC UK mixing championships and was drafted in to work with Northern beat label Grand Central Records. He met double bass playing jazz head Sneaky on the first day, and the pair instantly hit it off making music in a way that had never been tried before; using just one turntable and the bass they made serious block-rocking power grooves. Add to this the warped visuals from the mind of Parkers old art college friend Chris Drury, and you have one stunningly unique outfit.
After releasing three critically acclaimed LPs (The Main Event, Superhero Music and Fingathing & The Big Red Nebula Band), gaining a cult following and touring as far as Russia, Africa, USA, Latvia and most of Europe, as well as being asked personally by DJ Shadow to support him on his UK tour, Fingathing went on hiatus is 2006.
Re-assembling to create a newer, more powerful vision of themselves, 2014 saw the Return Of The Thing EP released (co-produced by Sirconical) and a large UK tour followed to promote the new sound. With Tru Thoughts about to release a cover of the Georgio Moroder classic I Feel Love which the pair recorded along with blues/folk siren Jesca Hoop on guest vocals, we’re delighted to welcome Fingathing to the Hare & Hounds for their first Birmingham show in nearly 10 years.
