“Reggae City 2012″ returns to bring outdoor stages, lush PAs and a taste of the Caribbean to the streets of Birmingham once again. Presenting some of the finest International Roots, Reggae and Dub artists, alongside the best of contemporary West Midlands and UK talent, there is nothing like the real Reggae City!

Beyond the natty bass, roots and rockers, “Reggae City” also explores the huge influence that Reggae has had on today’s dance and club music scene. As in 2011, the roadway will rumble and arches will bounce to the bass led new generation sounds of Jungle, Dubstep, Dub and Hip-Hop.

Three venues, heavy weight sounds and with peace and harmony in mind, Birmingham will lively up itself once more! As part of the super long Jubilee weekend, the 2nd of June sees “Reggae City” run conscious vibes, bring ital foods and a festival feeling to the Rainbow complex.

The Nextmen, aka Brad Baloo and Dom Search, are sure to provide another sweaty styled-out club set for us to enjoy.  Their performances are nothing short of incendiary events!  Expect everything and more – hip-hop, reggae, dubstep, jungle, 4/4 the lot.

Internationally famous they are beloved the world over by dedicated followers of music (not fashion).  Perpetually on a groove irrespective of genre, expect another melting-pot of dancefloor fuel from these boys!

In support we have the long runnning local collective, and true party starters in their own right, Munchbreak. Rooted in hip-hop, exploring lyricism, layered with funky beats, eminating from the underground and rounded off with some turntable wizardry, their new material must be heard!

And, as if that wasn’t enough, we also have DJ Narrative (aka Marc Reck) keeping the party vibes alive. Akin to Brad and Dom, Marc’s sets are inventive and genre hopping adventures. One of the most skillful and interesting DJs and sounds around – you won’t stop dancing!

The Apples have been creating genre melting, infectious grooves for nearly a decade now. Blending a unique concoction of 4 decks, 4 blazing horns, double bass, drums and heavy electronic effects, The Apples create a big band vibe mixed with their Middle Eastern influences. Their sound pushes the boundaries of modern funk and rocks the socks of any dancefloor!

The Apples are at their best live, spontaneous composition shines bright and they work their audiences into a booty-shaking, body heaving frenzy. Recent live appearances include WOMAD, Camp Bestival and Secret Garden Party festivals as well as being firm favourites at our own Shambala Festival.

Live on stage we have the Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra for this special occasion. These guys are (for Jon) the best afrobeat band in the UK.  Drawing on the late great Fela Kuti’s roots, the band underpin the afrobeat groove with a modern heavy funk sound like no other – click the link to their label above to hear it for yourself!

In support we have the equally rawkus guitar riffs of Waiting For Kate. Stalwart’s of the South West, Bristol’s scene and venues like Mr Wolf, this is there first trip in a long time to Birmingham. Expect those ska funk Bristolian vibes to permeate throughout their set.

The Equators LIVE – 30 years on The Equators are back together, reformed and ready to hit the road again. The Equators are the real deal, true Ska pioneers, and their eagerly anticipated show is guaranteed to get the crowd moving.

Formed in 1977 by the brothers Bailey (Donald, Leo & Rocky).The Equators were signed by Stiff Records when spotted performing alongside fellow local legends; The Beat. Their career with Stiff Records began with The Equators backing the Jamaican ska-reggae great, Desmond Dekker!!!

The Boom Operators LIVE – A bass heavy sonic cocktail of dub, hip-hop and electronic. The Boom Operator’s sound will surely shake the dance. Their frequency is from a sound lab of the future, the sounds of the streets marching forward, The Boom Operator’s are not to be missed.

Tom Dunstan aka Automatom takes the helm, multiple DMC champion Switch sits in for Spock,  Hugh Graham (1Eye, Oya Batacuda etc), Richard March (Bentley’s / Pop Will Eat itself) and Gary Williams (Lapsteel) are in the engine room, and Zion Lion takes over the comms channel.

Jazz sensibility with future dance floor orientated grooves, deep funk and tough drums.

Will Holland is one of the most talented and prolific artists in the world of alternative dance music today. Recording under various guises, Will first found acclaim as Quantic. As well as Quantic and the Quantic Soul Orchestra Will is one half of The Limp Twins, a duo he formed with Russ Porter. Initially a deejay partnership, it wasn’t long before they started recording, with Russ taking on the vocal duties and Will adding the magic with his savvy production.
Quantic released a two-disc ‘One Offs, Remixes and B Sides’ album in 2005, which featured a collaboration with Mr Scruff and remixes by Pilooski and Seiji; and his fifth long player, ‘An Announcement To Answer’ followed in 2006, cementing his reputation as a 21st Century Quincy Jones.

Quantic regularly DJs across the world (and we mean the World not just America, Europe and Japan) spreading the unique Quantic sound with each set. His music has been featured on countless compilations and appeared in TV soundtracks, and as ever he has a busy schedule of remixes from respected labels across the board. In 2007 he relocated to Colombia, where he has had a studio built and is continuing to create exciting music at a characteristically prolific rate, taking inspiration from the heady mix of rhythms and sounds on his doorstep.

2008 saw a new project come to life, under the moniker Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno, a summery dub and reggae-inspired affair with an authentic tropical vibe. The album, ‘Death Of The Revolution’ came out in July 2008 and features Will Holland on various instruments with contributions from a host of Latin American musicians, including the legendary Peruvian pianist Alfredo Linares. This album pricked up the ears of many tastemakers and fans alike, including Gilles Peterson and Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2), who have been excited and curious about the new progression in Quantic’s music – and impressed that it sounds as stunning and original as any Quantic album to date.

2009 Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, a handpicked band of internationally renowned musicians set to take over from The Quantic Soul Orchestra in realising the next stage of Holland’s musical vision.
